  Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who is currently imprisoned in a labour camp outside of Moscow, has gone on hunger strike to protest a lack of medical care. “I declared hunger strike with the demand to respect the law and to let the invited doctor see me,” Navalny said in a statement published on Instagram on Wednesday. The Kremlin critic is reportedly suffering from back pain that is radiating into his right leg, where it is causing paralysis. Doctors and his lawyers fear that he could lose his leg. “I now lie hungry, but still with both legs,” Navalny wrote. “Instead of being given medical help, I’m being tortured with lack of sleep (they wake me eight times per night),” he said, adding that going on hunger strike was the only means left to him. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) says it has uncovered a syndicate and arrested three suspects involved in the adulteration of petroleum products. Mrs Christiana Abiakam-Omanu, the  Commandant of NSCDC in Bayelsa, made the disclosure on Wednesday while parading the suspects before newsmen at NSCDC Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital. Abiakam-Omanu said that her command, on a tip-off, caught a petroleum product delivery truck conveying products from Calabar depot which stopped at designated spots at Elele on the East-West Road where illegally refined products were being filled into the truck. She said that three suspects and a 40,000 litres capacity truck laden with suspected adulterated product were impounded at the illegal loading point at Elele by her command. Global trade is set to grow by eight percent in 2021, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said Wednesday, stressing that the route out of the Covid-19 crisis rested on the rapid rollout of vaccines. The predicted bounce-back in global merchandise trade by volume is slightly stronger than the WTO’s previous 7.2 percent forecast issued in October. The organisation said global trade shrank by 5.3 percent in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic shocked the world economy. “The strong rebound in global trade since the middle of last year has helped soften the blow of the pandemic for people, businesses, and economies,” said the WTO’s new boss Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The global trade body’s assessment of the Covid-19’s impact on 2020 trade is nowhere near as bad as had been first predicted when the pandemic broke out.
